The 16th Youth Championships of the European Union and the 25th Styrian Jugendopen were held in Mureck, southern Styria, from 1 to 9 August. Organizer Erich Gigerl was able to offer best playing conditions for 124 young people from 18 countries in the multi-purpose hall. In the EU Championships the players fought in the age groups U8, U10, U12 and U14 for a total of eight titles, awarded separately for girls and boys.

The new champions in the girl groups are Sonja Röhrer (AUT, U8), Nora Rasheva (BUL, EU 10), Zuzanna Rejniak (POL, U12), Alicia Randrianarimanana (FRA, U14) and in the boy groups Lloyd Shang Burkart (GER, U8 ), William Shi (AUT, U10), Enrico Follesa (BEL, U12) and Collin Colbow (GER, U14). Overall, Austria could win 10 of the 24 possible medals.

In the Styrian Open the winners are Laurence Jetzl (AUT, U10), Adrian Bakalarz (GER, U12), Stefan Martetschläger (AUT, U14), Paul Wendl (AUT, U16) and Markus Liszka (AUT, U18). Mayor Anton Vukan is pleased that this year’s championships were held for the 15th time in Mureck, only the 2003 premiere took place in Graz, and looks forward to the 2019 event with confidence.
