altFrom 1 to 9 August, the 16th EU Youth Championships and the 25th Styrian Youth Open takes place in Mureck. Organizer Erich Gigerl welcomed participants from 18 nations, who will fight for the EU titles (U8, U10, U12, U14) in four age groups and will also play in two groups (U18, U12) in the Jugendopen. In total, around 125 young people will come to Mureck and participate in the tournaments.

Elofavorites of the EU Championships are: Norbert Szilagyi (HUN, U14), Enrico Follesa (BEL, U12), William Shi (AUT, U10) Lloyd Shang Burkart (GER, U8) and girls Alicia Randrianarimanana (FRA, U14) , Zuzanna Rejniak (POL, U12), Lucia Stoll (FRA, U10) and Siobhan Mensah (AUT, U8). The games are broadcasted live in the internet.

The guests of honor at the opening ceremony were Denise Haas, the head of the youth department of the province of Styria, district deputy captain Marko Rosa, Anton Vukan, the mayor of the city Mureck and Kurt Jungwirth, the president of the Styrian Chess Federation.
